Outsmart Fraudsters And Protect Your Identity

July 8th, 2008

One of the most frustrating aspects of Internet Marketing is born in the WHOSITS database. This database, owned by Google, lets anyone see the information submitted when a small business owners purchases a domain name.

Unfortunately, anyone can gain access to the information. Most small business owners learn this within hours of buying a domain. The first calls come from internet marketing companies that promise to get their clients at the top of the search engines for a paltry $20 - $100 a month. Of course, what they don’t tell the prospective client is they use black hat SEO tactics which usually lead to the site being banned - forever.

The next set of calls come from telemarketers selling everything from magazines, to loans, to business opportunities. It is frustrating.

Filling in Forms

There are several ways to remain anonymous on the web. The most popular method is to use a bogus business name that leads to a PO box in a ‘mailing center.’ This way, the fraudsters are frustrated by the ‘ghost.’ And, if lucky, the business owner may entice the fraudster to use the information resulting in legal retribution.

There is also no reason to enter your real information into forms. Remaining vague, or using the wrong prefix before your name, can protect your identity.

Save Your Password

Everyone knows what spyware is. Few people know that it can tap into the ’save your information’ services on your PC. Many people use the ‘fill form’ tools in Windows and in their computer browser. Spyware comes in, collects this data, and then sends it to fraudsters.

Never include any information in these boxes. Another way the PC collects sensitive data is the drop down box that asks “Do you want to save this password.” Always select no.

PC Protection

Any website that is linked to the internet needs a firewall, spyware cleaner, malware cleaner, and virus scan. AVG has a free virus scan that many businesses swear is the best in the world. It not only removes viruses, worms, and trogans, but also can remove malware.

Yahoo has a nifty little spyware remover on their browser tool bar. This tool, in conjunction with lavasoft’s spyware remover has offered many businesses almost 100% protection.

Windows comes complete with a firewall. However, many business owners shut this down and use ZoneAlarm.

These tools will protect most PCs from phishing attacks and spyware that roves the net looking for small business owners who must include their information on the web.

Web Information

Many small businesses must include their address, and contact information on their website. However, saving the information in a gif image makes it invisible to spyware and hackers.

Encrypting the email or leaving a space is another way to protect email addresses. Many small business owners are starting to show their email addresses like this: smallbusinessowner @mydomainname.com smallbusinessowner @mydomainname.com

Notice the space - this makes the email addy invisible to spyware. However, users can copy and paste the link into their browser.

Instead of posting the email at all, why not consider adding a form to the website. Most forms can be set to automatically email the owner the moment the form is submitted - but the information remains invisible to hackers.

One last tip: Change passwords once every two to three months.

July 8th, 2008

What you put into your body determines just how you live or how long you live. Food takes in vital nutrients, giving you energy for life and aiding in all bodily functions. You receive nutrients from food for maturation and health. There candidly isn’t one food has all the nutrients that you need, hence the four basic food groups comes to the rescue. Eating from the four basic food groups enables you to acquire the nutrients you need from eating a balanced diet.

What Are the Basic Nutrients Found in Food?

Fats and carbohydrates are also vital to splendid health. They will give you the energy you need. Multitudinous foods comprise of fat and carbohydrates. Milk, cheese, and butter are rich in fat and foods from the bread and cereal group such as pasta is rich in carbohydrates. Fruits also incorporate a fair amount of carbs. Bounteous people take a daily vitamin supplement. Did you know that you can also get an adequate amount of vitamins from food you eat? Vitamins help your body to grow and maintain stupendous health. The origin of the term vitamin surfaced in the early 1900s. The general consensus was that vitamins contained nitrogen and was consequently spelled “viatmine”. After it was discovered that all vitamins do not emcompass nitrogen, the “e” was dropped.

Vitamins can be found in foodstuffs or can be obtained as an over the counter pharmaceutical. Sometimes when foods containing life-giving vitamins are cooked, a immense deal of those vitamins are lost, so taking supplements may be helpful. If one does not get the required amount of vitamins in his or her diet the metabolic balance can be disrupted and deliberate health problems could arise. Some of the vitamins you will obtain in foods are:

Vitamin A

This is found in carrots, sweet potatoes, melons and green leafy vegetables to name a scattering. Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin and positive eye function.

Calcium helps with the growth of teeth and bones as well as the functions of your heart and muscles. Some foods rich in calcium are milk, cheese, yogurt and some vegetables.

Iron is found in liver, beans cereals, some dried fruit and some vegetables. This mineral helps blood carry oxygen to your cells.

Potassium and sodium both help to maintain the function of your muscles and nerves. Foods containing these vital minerals include cereals, salt, and some vegetables to name a scattering.

Understanding the nutrients found in food is just the basic step to eating right. All the foods are divided into four basic food groups. The food groups relief you decide just what you should eat. In each group there are opposed foods with incomparable nutrients. You should eat from the four basic food groups at each meal for a balanced diet.

The four food groups include the milk and dairy group, the meat group, the bread and cereal group and the fruit and vegetable group. You should eat a certain amount of food from each group everyday in order to get all the nutrients you need. Everyday you should have three to four servings of the milk and dairy group; one or two servings form the meat group, three or four servings from the bread and cereal group and three to four servings from the fruit and vegetable group. If you eat the right amount of servings from each group every day you will be eating a balanced diet.

Although water is not considered a nutrient or a food group, it is vital for life. You get water from multitudinous foods, but will get most of your water from by clearly drinking it. Water keeps your body hydrated and aid in blood formation as well as digestion. Drink eight to ten glasses a day for stupendous health.

8 Top Tips for Becoming a Professional Gambler in Horse Racing, Poker and Other Sports

July 8th, 2008

Most folk are under the opinion that professional gamblers have one bet, play one game of poker, or some other form of gambling, and then collect the winnings and go back to their big mansion for a few months rest, before having another gamble!!

I pray it was like that, but in valid life it is vastly different. I personally work 10-12 hours a day, 360 days a year, and still do a bit on the days off, including Christmas day. When you see professional poker players they are spending 3-5 days at a table in a game every week, sometimes sitting for 12 hours, and when they are not doing that, they are at home playing poker on the computer.

So if you are looking for a relaxing life, do not take up betting as a profession. Yes it can pay well, very well, but you need to put in a lot of work, and it can be 2-3 years before you are making any meaningful hard cash. Anyone who tells you otherwise is possibly lying just to receive your hard cash.

When you see tipping advertisers stating things like We made $26,000 to $100 stakes in the last 12 months , it looks sensational. However, they need to receive your attention as a 1/8th ad in a paper costs around $500, and they need that money back before turning a profit. And how innumerable average gamblers have $100 to bet, especially when you need a betting bank, and with $100 stakes, the cash you need before you even place one bet is around $3,500, any less and you can easily blow it all. Then divide the $26,000 by the $100 to work out how many points you make a year, and that is 260, then divide by 52 to see how numerous points profit a week, and that comes to 5pts a week. Wow!! If you are just starting off you are likely to only be using a realistic $5, so that is $25 a week average. That may not sound much but you have to learn to walk before you can run. If you cannot profit with 10c bets, how the hell will you profit with $100 bets?

Also think why various tipsters advertise every day. This is because they have such a considerable turnover; they need to keep replenishing the customer base. This does not always mean the tipster is rubbish, in some cases they may be profitable long term, but the average Joe Punter always wants profit NOW and every day, and average Joe points more than 5 points per week, whereas a full time professional would be happy with that.

If you are going to gamble to profit, then for the inaugural few months this should be your conditioning were you will be doing a lot of work for little return, but you will also learn how to handle losing runs, how to cope with mistakes, and if it does all go improper and you lose the betting bank, you should have learnt a lot from it for as little loss as possible, as you should only ever bet what you can afford to lose, especially while proving to yourself you can profit. You may have a spare $10,000 available, but prove you can profit with a $1000 bank maiden, and then add to the bank monthly.

So here are the 8 tips you need to learn, and stick to religiously if you want to stand a chance of ever making money from gambling.

1. Patience: If you want big profits now, try the lottery. Building up you betting banks takes time a lot of time.

2. Betting Banks: If you do not have a betting bank to emergence with, and you are just betting from whatever is in your pocket, you will never make a profit. It is as simple as that. Most punters lie to themselves that they are breaking even. Do not do that, be truthful.

3. Staking: You see betting plans for sale on EBay, most of them may make you a few dollars quickly, but it is 100% guaranteed they will bust your bank as these are designed by amateurs who have no understanding of gambling maths in the real world. Always onset with levels, if you cannot make hard cash with that simple staking plan you will not make bankroll with anything more complicated. Once you have proven over a few months you can turn a profit with level stakes, and then you can switch to each bet being between 1%-3% of the bank. Most professionals will emergence at 3%, but get it down to 1% as the bank grows.

4. Bank Management: Managing banks is not just staking, it also involves listing every bet on a spreadsheet so you can monitor things like average odds, strike rate, losing runs, etc. If you do not list every bet, you will have no idea where you stand, and no way of having data to look back and learn from.

5. Risk Management: Most people follow one tipster, or one system. This is usually suicide, you do not see the big boys in the city markets investing everything in one stock do you? No. They spread it around, and so should you. Use a number of systems, proven tipsters, method bets, etc. And ensure you have a separate betting bank for each (you can use the same betting account, as the spreadsheets you keep will tell you the amount which is in each bank).

6. Alcohol: NEVER drink while betting, you will bet more than you should, you will bust banks, you will play bets you would never do when sober.

7. Forums: Join a forum where you can bite ideas, this can prove a powerful aid, but make sure it is a decent one, and not full of idiots just spouting off how good they are!

8. Fun Bets: You are often told not to do any ‘fun bets’ if you wish to turn professional, but this will not happen, as it is hard to break old habits at first. The best way to treat fun bets is to handle them as you would any pro bets. Separate betting bank, list all bets, and it will not be long before you lose the bank and realise how wonderful your own tipping is!

This advice goes for betting in any country, on horseracing, greyhounds, soccer, NFL, poker, etc.

You can also find innumerable free horse racing systems, staking systems, poker systems, on the internet, ignore them, they are only free for a reason, as they lose hard cash.

These days it is possible to receive horseracing software, poker software, etc that can facilitate you, they will only make you hard cash if you are already doing so, they just enhance your skills, not make them. Search the web for reviews on every product before parting with any money; ask people on forums which software is the best.

Lilies Beautiful But Deadly To Your Precious Felines…

July 8th, 2008

As though letting us know that winter’s all but gone, and spring is just around the corner, these glorious gifts of spring announce the coming of a brand new season of warmth and hope. And just as in years past, again, beautiful varieties of Lilies, with their hardy, fragrant petals and thick, stunning leaves, grace the entrances of our local grocery stores.

Breathtakingly beautiful, as they may be, these spectacular floral displays spell serious trouble for our beloved housecats. In fact, they are deadly poisonous to felines. Simply brushing up against, any variety of this plant, and then licking its fur, will cause a healthy, lively cat to become fatally ill. And to offer your cat the very best chance of survival, symptoms must be noted immediately and the vet notified of the emergency, regardless of the time of day or night.

Signs to look for:

Although the symptoms of poisoning can vary somewhat, mainly they are: drooling, repeated vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sudden collapse, paralyses, and/or excessive irritation such as red, swollen, blistering or raw skin of the mouth or throat.

What to do:

Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency clinic immediately if your cat is showing any of these signs of poisoning or if you see your cat come in contact with any type of lily.

Note: If you should happen to see your cat eat something that you suspect is poisonous, don’t attempt to make it vomit. Take your cat to the vet with a sample of the plant or, better yet, a plant label if one exists; and let the doctor know the time of eating and any symptoms that maybe occurring. Also be aware that for some types of plants several days may pass between the ingestion of the undesirable material and the effects.

ICC Cricket Ranking: Love It or Hate It But You Can’t Escape From It

July 8th, 2008

To say that ranking is ‘just another number to me’ and ‘I don’t care about them’ is a clich?d statement. But many cricket players use this oft repeated statement whenever a new ranking comes up and they see that they are listed no where among the top. Ranking in any sport be it cricket or tennis is something that many people do not like, but there is no escape from it. ICC cricket rankings are the most widely recognized and accepted rankings in the world of cricket.

ICC also known as the International Cricket Council is the governing body in the cricket world. The game is controlled and administered by this governing body. ICC cricket rankings are widely accepted as official rankings in the cricket field. ICC gives rankings both to countries and individual cricket players. Rankings given to teams depend on two factors. The first factor is the performance of the team in the field and the second factor is the strength of the opposing team. This means that if any team wins against a strong opposition like Australia, their ranking can shoot up but if the win is against a low ranked team like Bangladesh, then there may be very little change in the rankings.

ICC cricket ranking are of various kinds. Broadly the rankings are divided in to one day international cricket ranking and test cricket ranking. Under both test cricket ranking and one day international ranking there is country ranking and individual player ranking. Within both the one day and test cricket rankings, players are individually ranked based on their performance and ability. So you can see the list of top ten batsmen, top ten bowlers and the top ten all-rounders in the world. The ICC provides a list of all top 100 players of the game for those who are really interested in knowing about players those who do not figure at the top ten.

Cricket fans eagerly await the release of the list of top players and the top playing cricket nation after every major tournament. Players are ranked on a scale of 0 points to 1000 points. ICC cricket rankings takes in to consideration the past performance of a player for giving rankings. So this means that even if a player is not active in the international cricket scene for a long time due to any reason, he can maintain his ranking at the top ten based on his previous exceptional performances.

Sachin Tendulkar of India is the best example of this. He was not active in the international cricket arena for about four to five months. However due to his consistent performance in the past he was in the list of top twenty players for a long time. The latest ICC cricket ranking has Australia as the top team for both test matches and one day internationals. Adam Gilchrist of Australia and Shaun Pollock of South Africa are the top ranked batsmen and bowler respectively in the latest one day international rankings released by the International Cricket Council.

Computer Mice : Their Telephone Origins

July 8th, 2008

Like so many developments that we take for common on our computers the humble mouse had its origins in the innovative work done for more than two decades at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). The PARC mouse had two rollers for horizontal and vertical motion and a single button. The deucedly boxy shape was favored by many of developers at PARC and remarkably has persisted through many mouse (or mice) incarnations.

Firstly the Microsoft mouse design has had major impacts in the mice industry. Microsoft mice always had ergonomic design. The first Microsoft mouse had a broad teardrop shape with two buttons. The original green buttoned model had a steel ball that spawned an industry in foam mouse pads. The next iteration had larger buttons, a larger body, and a rubber coated ball.

When Microsoft decided that the mouse needed to be redesigned, it turned to the venerable firm Matrix Design of San Francisco. Microsoft routinely used and uses third parties to design and software develop many of the items and software that we take for granted today that Microsoft devoted alone . Mike Nuttal, one of Matrix Designs founders was intrigued by Microsoft’s project: reshaping the exterior without altering the internal mechanism.

Matrix did change one internal element: the position of the mouse ball. “Almost the first thing we tried was to move the ball forward”, Nuttal remarked later. In the old design the ball sat forward under the palm. A computer mouse user has a natural tendency to put their weight on the palms of their hands and thus on the ball. By moving the mouse ball forward the result was much greater accuracy of the mouse.

“We knew the buttons had to be larger “Nuttal as well said “We tried several button sizes and in the process of designing we ended up incorporating the buttons into the body of the mouse.” Another change was in the relative size of the buttons. It was felt that the left buttons should be larger than the right. The results were more than favorable especially with left handed users. By making the left button larger finger position no longer was a major factor therefore the index finger could curve form lower left to upper right ( vice versa in lefties ) . This is the position the index finger naturally favors. In addition the previous rubber-dome switches were replaced with micro switches that had a short travel depression and better tactile feedback.

It was not long before the firm Logitech responded to Microsoft’s mice innovations.

Logitech’s first mouse was truly one of the first examples of the upcoming international efforts in product development and design. A Swiss based Professor: Professor Niklaus Wirth spent a year on sabbatical at Xerox PARC in 1970 and returned to Europe to test mouse designs, working closely with Inria, a French design center for office automation products. In the end their final design was a round mouse with front mounted buttons.

Product development and testing ensued over the position of the buttons, and the front position won over the top.

However, Logitech soon found that the buttons on the front made the mouse jump backward slightly when clicked. The design was abandoned in favor of a wedge shape, which was followed by the rectangular shape that we today.

What is interesting about all of this is the effect of outside products on an item that we take for granted today - the humble mouse which so functional that we seldom give it second thought.

The rounded heel that fits so well in the palm of your hand, the large buttons, and the smooth edges all have roots in the most universal of electrical / electronic products.

Mr. Nuttal and Matrix Design’s area in great expertise was in the design and development of telephones.

Improve Your Hair And Skin. See Results In Days.

July 8th, 2008

Why is coconut oil the best oil for your skin?

Coconut oil is good as a skin moisturiser. A study shows that extra virgin coconut oil is as useful and safe as mineral oil when used as a moisturiser, with absence of adverse reactions.

The biggest chemical barrier to infectious organisms is the acid layer on the skin. Healthy skin has a pH of about 5, making it slightly acidic. Our sweat (containing uric and lactic acids) and body oils promote this acidic environment. For this reason, sweat and oil do us good. Harmless bacteria can tolerate the acid and live on the skin, but troublesome bacteria can’t thrive and their numbers are few.

Coconut oil will absorb easily, keep the skin soft, and yet without feeling greasy.

Most commercial creams and lotions are commonly water. Their moisture is quickly absorbed into dry, wrinkled skin. As the water enters the skin, it expands the tissues, like filling a balloon with water, so that wrinkles fade away and the skin feels smoother. But this is not permanent. As soon as the water evaporates or is carried away by the blood stream, the dry, wrinkled skin returns. No matter how hard you try people will never be able to permanently cure dry, wrinkled skin with any commercial body lotion or body care merchandise. In addition to water, most lotions have an oil of some type. This oil is almost always a highly refined vegetable oil deficient of all natural protective antioxidants. One product in our food supply and in body care merchandise that leads to a great deal of free radicals is oxidized vegetable oils.

Cocout Oil is not like other oils used to soften rough, dry skin. It will help to reduce chronic skin inflammation within days and be soothing and healing to wounds, blood blisters, rashes, etc.

Our skin is made up of connective tissues. These tissues give our skin strength and elasticity. When we are young and healthy the skin is smooth, elastic and supple. This is the effect of tough connective fibers. As we age their fibers are continually subjected to free-radical attack which breaks them down. As a result, connective tissues become hardened and lose both elasticity and strength. The skin loses its capacity to hold itself together and begins to sag and become wrinkled. Once young, soft and smooth the skin turns dry and leathery.

Antiseptic fatty acids in coconut oil help to prevent fungal and bacterial infections in the skin when it is consumed and to some extent, when it is applied directly to the skin. The only way to gain entry into the body other than through the natural openings, such as the nose and mouth, is by penetrating the skin. When the skin’s defenses break down, infections can result. Acne, ringworm, herpes, boils, athlete’s foot, and warts are just some of the infectious conditions that can affect the skin and body.

Once a free-radical reaction is started it can cause a chain reaction which produces more free radicals, which ultimately damages thousands of molecules. The only way our body has to fight them is with antioxidants. When a free radical comes into contact with an antioxidant, the chain reaction is stopped. For this reason, it is good to have plenty of antioxidants in our cells and tissues to protect us. The number of antioxidants we have in our tissues is determined to a large extent by the nutrients in our diet. Having anti-oxidants in skin care products is important, too. Dr. Ray Peat, a biochemist who has written about the antioxidant properties of coconut oil, states It is well established that dietary coconut oil reduces our need for vitamin E, but I think its antioxidant role is more general than that, and that it has both direct and indirect antioxidant activities. Virgin Coconut Oil is especially useful in fighting free-radicals, as it is unrefined and hasn’t been extracted of any of its natural components through the refining process.

Conventional body care goods that are made with refined vegetable oils which have all the antioxidants removed from them are highly prone to free-radical generation both in and outside the body. That is why eating processed vegetable oils can cause a deficiency in vitamin E and other antioxidants. The antioxidants are used up fighting off free radicals causing permanent damage to connective tissues. This is also the reason why you should be careful about the type of oils you use on your skin, and in your lotions, creams and lip balms. If you use a lotion, or cream with a refined oil in it you are in fact causing your skin to age faster. The lotion, though it may bring temporary improvement will actually accelerate the aging of the skin and even develop skin cancer through the free radicals that are readily formed from the refined vegetable oil..

The ideal lotion is one that is made from an oil that not only softens the skin, but protects it against damage, promotes healing and gives it a more youthful, healthy appearance. Coconut oil fits that description.

Quality virgin coconut oil is the best natural ingredient for skin lotion available. It prevents destructive free-radical formation and provides protection against them. It helps to keep connective tissues strong and supple so that the skin doesn’t sag and wrinkle. In some cases it might even restore damaged or diseased skin. The oil is absorbed into the skin and into the cell structure of the connective tissues, limiting the damage excessive sun exposure can cause.

Coconut Oil can help to keep the skin from developing liver spots, and other blemishes caused by aging and over exposure to sunlight.

Coconut oil for your scalp and scalp

What coconut oil can do for your skin it can do for your hair.

In India and Sri Lanka, coconut oil is commonly used for styling hair, and cooling or soothing the head and provide stress relief.

Beauticians who are familiar with coconut swear by it. It softens the hair and conditions the scalp. Using the coconut oil as a pre-wash conditioner can rid a person of dandruff better than a medicated shampoo.

What coconut oil can do for your skin it can do for your hair.

The protective environment of the skin and how coconut oil helps

Our skin is home to many tiny organisms, most of which are harmless; some are beneficial. At least one variety of bacterium is essential to the healthy environment on our skin. It feeds on the sebum, breaking down the tryglycerides into free fatty acids. The bacteria actually feed on the glycerol part of the triglyceride. This leaves fatty acids which are now freed from the glycerol unit that held them together. Medium chain fatty acids which are bound to the glycerol unit as they are in coconut oil have no antimicrobial properties. However, when they are broken apart into free fatty acids, they become powerful antimicrobials.

So these bacteria convert the medium chain triglycerides (in the sebum or on the skin) into free fatty acids that can kill disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The combination of the slightly acid pH and medium chain fatty acids offers a protective chemical layer on the skin that prevents infection from disease-causing organisms. Due primarily to the action of bacteria, the oil on the surface of your skin and hair is composed of between 40 and 60 percent free fatty acids. The medium chain fatty acids in the sebum provide the protective layer on the skin that kills harmful germs. Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of medium chain fatty acids.

When coconut oil is put on the skin it doesn’t have any immediate antimicrobial action. However, when bacteria which are always present on the skin turn these triglycerides into free fatty acids, just as it does with sebum, the result is an increase in the number of antimicrobial fatty acids on the skin and protection from infection. The free fatty acids also help to contribute to the acid environment on the skin which repels disease causing germs.

Coconut Oil is an great ingredient to use in healing salves and ointments. People have used a coconut oil/crushed garlic mixture at night to eliminate plantar warts and athlete’s foot with excellent results.

In the making of soaps, the soap does not have a tallow smell nor the smell of a vegetable oil. Instead, it has a nice fresh smell and yields a nice fluffy lather. Coconut oil is one of the most popular oils used in soap making.

Funny Dog Names

July 8th, 2008

You know how hard it may be to decide on which dog or breed of dog to buy, you know how difficult it may be to convince the members of the family that you want to have a dog and that you will take care of him in a proper way. Nevertheless, there is something which may seem easy but it is not. Quite the opposite in fact, naming your dog may turn out to be a complete nightmare if you do not take the time and energy to do it right.

Buying a dog can be quite painstaking, altering your whole lifestyle can be nerve wracking at first, but if on top of that, your dog does not look or resemble or the effort you had to put together to buy him and make him adapt to your way of life, the whole situation may turn out to be rather disappointing.

Giving your dog a name requires your attention and dedication for some time. First of all you will need to consider that whenever your dog is called by the name it is because he had to learn it somehow. Therefore, it is really important to give your dog a name that is easy for him to learn as well as for you to remember.

Extravagant and presumed of names may well end up being called finally, puppy or doggie. You certainly do not wan that to happen. In order to give the dog an appropriate name you should also pay attention to his personality, his energy, his daily routine, etc.

Among the many styles of names that you can come up with, there are some which can be improved to become rather funny or at least striking, not the usual, silly or boring names.

Let’ take a look at some possible alternatives:

For those dogs which have a funny appearance, names such as Buzie, Bungee or Buccy seem to be appropriate.

For those dogs which are as energetic as a bottle of Gatorade, a name such as Jazzy may sound ok. What about Jeopardy, for those intriguing dogs with that puzzling look?

Why not name him after someone famous you admire, for example if your dog is rather fat and his rotation is not very active, Homer would sound hilarious or even Barney, Homer’s drinking friend. With smart, intelligent dogs, the option can be Lisa, if it is a female , it would sound just right.

Baldy for those dogs without much hair would seem suitable, Bingo if you are into casino games, or if you had luck in the past and want to remember that by naming your dog that way.

Finally, Magellan, a bit of history, for those intrepid dogs which like adventure so much, would sound a bit over the top but funny, nevertheless.

Leave Your Drama At Home: More Rockin’ And Less Squawkin’!

July 8th, 2008

No matter how we, as human beings, live our lives…drama happens. And the average musician has more drama than the crazy cat lady down the block has bags of used litter on her porch. At every turn, your average wannabe rockstar has a crazy squeeze, a crazier ex, a harem of would-be lovers, and a gaggle of insane stalkers. Then there’s the band drama, manager drama, club drama, fan drama, gear drama, and let’s not even get started on the online drama potential. Before you know it, your band makes “Desperate Housewives” look like 60 Minutes.

Certainly, no one ever said that music was going to be a safe, secure and solid profession to get into. Any industry that pays buckets of money to young, pretty people for jumping around and showing off is bound to inspire zaniness to some degree or another. And the creative process often brings with it a certain amount of tortured genius that fuels the seeds of drama like miracle grow on weeds. Plus, there are more than twenty million musicians around the world that are clamoring for maybe a thousand record deals like contestants on “Survivor” running obstacles courses for a single meager chicken wing. If there was a country built on drama, a musician would be its queen.

However, as much as the music biz is filled with glitz and glamour and the stuff that tabloid headlines are made of, it is also a business. And if there’s one thing you don’t want in the middle of your business, it’s drama. There’s a reason why doctors don’t fight over dying patients about their golf scores, pilots don’t announce to a plane full of passengers that they’ve been dating the stewardess, and the chef doesn’t come to tell you he forgot to wash his hands before he cooked your four-star meal…drama does not belong in business. Whether you’re aspiring to get a record deal or searching for a cure for cancer, leave your drama at home!

The following are a few tips that will help you to navigate the gossip and erratic turbulence of life in the music industry without becoming a slave to your own drama:

1.) Don’t Let The Internet Suck You In—Every since the invention of the internet, there’s been more drama in cyberspace than at a convention for bipolar drag queens. It’s easy to gossip and backbite while you can stay anonymous, so the internet has becoming a breeding ground for anyone and everyone with an agenda, an out-of-control jealousy problem, an axe to grind, or an unbelievable ego. Angry, upset, small-minded people with inferiority complexes like size of Shamu will use the internet to poke at your band with a cyber stick. As hard as it may be, you need to learn to let it all roll off your back. As long as they’re posting about you, it means they’re listening. Removing their inflammatory posts, or replying with similar negativity, feeds the drama until your entire message board is about the trouble-maker on your web site and not your music. What if a potential magazine reviewer or an interested label rep is perusing your page with interest only to find more info about your fight with some internet psycho than about your band? It’s not worth risking a loss of opportunity to engage in drama.

2.) Drama Doesn’t Belong At Your Gigs—When you’re at a show, your goal is to make music, engage the audience, sell CDs, and win the club over so that you can play there again and again. People make room in their schedules, pay for gas, and fork out cash for a cover charge and bar priced drinks, just to hear you play your songs for them. They want to be entertained; to get away from the pressures of their real lives and escape into the safety and excitement of your music and lyrics. What they don’t need is more drama at your gigs then they get from their office co-workers, their wacky neighbors, and bully at their kids’ school combined. Whatever problems you’re having in your personal and professional life, keep it away from your fans and your industry contacts or they’ll start to remember your shows more for the drama than for the music.

3.) Your Manager Is Not Your Therapist—Although a manager’s professional duties make them almost like the band’s parent, don’t cry to mommy every time the drummer calls you a name or your girlfriend decides she wants to play the field. There is too much music industry drama that your manager has to deal with every day, to add to his/her troubles by piling a heap of your personal woes on top of his/her already overburdened shoulders. If a club owner stiffs you at the door, tell your manager. If another band records one of your songs without permission, tell your manager. If your wife compulsively flashes her breasts at your shows, send her to a therapist, but leave your manager out of it.

4.) Take The Crazymakers Off Your Mailing List—A lot of damage control can be done simply by eliminating from your mailings the nuts that show up and bring their own boatload of drama. If you know that your ex has never gotten over you, that she’s off her meds and that she likes to show up and start swinging at every girl she thinks is catching your eye…why would you invite he to your shows? Comb your address book with a big, black sharpie pen and ink out the stalkers, crazies, attention-getters, and overblown drunkards that will turn each and every one of your gigs into a three-ring circus of drama that you’re forced to ringmaster from the stage during your set.

Once you remove the drama from your musical career, you’ll find that your gigs go smoother, your website is a more positive place for fans to hang in cyber space, and the industry is less wary about getting behind what you’re doing. It may seem silly, but too much drama can often be a warning sign that something is really wrong with a band and you may find that industry types will become gun shy around your band if they’re worried that your reputation as drama queen will be more trouble than it’s worth. Working in the music business is hard enough. Don’t give anybody any reason not to work with you. Be smart. Leave your drama at home and show the industry that your music is what’s most important to you and your band.
